What to Know

Critics Consensus

The sense of romantic spark has waned and the prevalence of stereotypes has grown in Jewel of the Nile, although there is still plenty of swooning action for fans of the first adventure.

The Jewel of the Nile | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Bob Thomas Associated Press [The script] seems to consist of shouted dialogue and descriptions of action scenes. Lewis Teague's direction doesn't help; the extreme closeups seem aimed for the cassette audience. Jul 23, 2019 Full Review The Jewel of the Nile | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Paul Attanasio Washington Post Director Lewis Teague uses the frame the way a magician uses a hat or a handkerchief: surprises are always popping into it, or out of its shadows. Jan 4, 2018 Full Review The Jewel of the Nile | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times It's to everybody's credit that The Jewel of the Nile is an ambitious and elaborate attempt to repeat the success of the first movie; it's not just a ripoff. Rated: 3/4 Jan 1, 2000 Full Review The Jewel of the Nile | Rotten Tomatoes (4) David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...the film’s mild success, at the outset, is due almost entirely to the irresistibly personable efforts of its two stars... Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 13, 2024 Full Review The Jewel of the Nile | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Grant Watson Fiction Machine A pesky sort of sequel, not so bad that one reviles it for good but sadly just good enough that once a decade or so you will find yourself giving it another chance and wasting another two hours finding out that it really is simple mediocre entertainment. Rated: 4/10 Mar 15, 2021 Full Review The Jewel of the Nile | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Death and peril are entirely unbelievable, while amorous bickering feels forced and inauthentic. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/01/24 Full Review alan g After such high expectations from the first movie this is a poor and pale shadow of the first. It killed the francise. Too bad it could not replicate the charm and fun of the first movie. Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/22/24 Full Review Katherine G Romancing of the stone is my favorite movie, this, most definitely, is not. Where the first movie is campy and fun, this one is campy, but in a sad painful way. The characters lack the natural, fun dynamic of the first movie. Yes, they dislike each other in the first movie, but that seems natural and they both learn and grow. The second movie backtracks on this and flattens the characters out. Not even Danny Devito is funny in this. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/21/23 Full Review Jeffrey P Direct sequel to Romancing the Stone with different character dynamics and a less tangible plot with a focus that is less physical and more spiritual than it's predecessor. It's a good thing they stopped here. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/12/23 Full Review Jack O Whilst I've been watching Romancing the Stone, I've decided to watch a sequel, The Jewel of the Nile. I was thinking about both of them films are as good as each other but in the recent years, it seems deteriorated because it's not as good as the first film. I remember watching it when I was a big kid back in 2007. The action scenes were pretty good. Lots of explosions and gun noises. Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner are back and Danny DeVito is back as a crook again and this time he teams with Jack Colton to find Joan Wilder in Arabia near Africa. Omar who is a villain who has the jewel, the jewel of the nile who Arabians called him ''Al-Julhara''. So they found Joan, escape from Omar and fly the jet aircraft and Ralph is left all alone with Arabians. They go to the African people, go to the train and got kidnapped by Omar. The Jewel of the Nile is not as good as Romancing the Stone but it's still good. The song that Billy Ocean sings is good. "When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going." I like that song even though Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito singing along with Billy. As long as he film gets cheesy, it's still an enjoyable movie that has it's moments. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/22/23 Full Review KEVIN H One of the worst movies I've ever watched. I only finished it so I could say I watched the whole thing.
