Chicken Soup Flavors & Seasonings

When it comes to creating a truly memorable slow cooker chicken noodle soup, flavor is key. While the classic combination of chicken, vegetables, and noodles is undeniably delicious and perfect for families with kids, it’s so easy to bump up the flavor! Try one of these ideas next time you make your chicken noodle soup.

  1. Herbs – If you want infuse extra flavor into your soup, think about adding some bay leaves, thyme sprigs, or even a handful of fresh parsley.
  2. Spices – If you like a bit of spice, add a pinch of ground black pepper, a sprinkle of paprika, or a dash of turmeric for a subtle kick. You can go with a hint of cayenne pepper for some heat. Just remember to start with a small amount and adjust according to your taste preferences so you don’t go overboard!
  3. Garlic & Onions – This is a tried and true duo to when you’re looking to pack in the flavor. Adding minced garlic or sautéed onions to your soup can bring depth and richness. The aroma alone will make your kitchen smell absolutely heavenly. Whenever I’m cooking up onions and garlic, my family is always interested in what’s going on in the kitchen! Sauté them in a little olive oil before adding them to the slow cooker for that extra burst of flavor.
  4. Salt & Pepper – Don’t underestimate the power of simple seasoning. You can get fancy but the basics can get the job done well. A generous pinch of salt helps to bring out the flavors of all the ingredients, while freshly ground black pepper adds a subtle hint of warmth. But be sure to check on the saltiness of your chicken broth and adjust accordingly so you don’t end up with too much!
  5. Seasoning Blends – If you’re short on time or want to add extra flavor the easy way, try premade seasoning blends. There are so many different options available that you can quickly add to the soup’s flavor. These blends are developed to complement various dishes and they work great for chicken noodle soup (and other soups!)

Frequently Asked Questions & Recipe Tips

Can you put raw chicken in a slow cooker for chicken noodle soup?
You can put raw chicken in the slow cooker for chicken noodle soup. Just make sure to cook the chicken thoroughly until it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F. You’ll also want to use forks to shred your chicken once it’s completely cooked.

How long do you cook chicken in a crockpot for soup?
Boneless, skinless chicken breasts usually take about 4 to 6 hours on low heat or 2 to 3 hours on high heat. If you opt to use other chicken like chicken thighs, you may need to add additional cooking time. Cooking time will depend on the size of your chicken pieces too.

The most important thing is to make sure you get the chicken completely cooked.

If you want to save time, you can also use pre-cooked shredded chicken or use some that you prepared before.

Can you put uncooked noodles in a crockpot soup?
You can put uncooked noodles in a crockpot soup. Just don’t add them too early because they can get mushy. I usually add my noodles with about 30 minutes left of cooking time.

How do you thicken chicken noodle soup in a crockpot?
If you want to thicken your soup, you have a few options:

  • You can remove some of the cooked vegetables and chicken from the soup, blend them until smooth, and then add the mixture back into the pot to thicken the soup.
  • You can mix a mixture of cornstarch or flour with water and stir it into the soup, allowing it to cook for a few more minutes until it thickens.

Can I cook frozen chicken in a crockpot for soup?
You can cook frozen chicken in a crockpot for soup but it’s really important to make sure that the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F so that it’s safe to eat. Your cooking time will probably be longer when starting with frozen chicken versus thawed chicken.

How long does chicken noodle soup last in a Crockpot?
You can keep the soup warm in the slow cooker for two hours on the warm setting.

After a few hours, you will want to go ahead and refrigerate your leftovers.

How do I store leftovers?

Store your leftover soup in an airtight container in the refrigerator. You can store the soup for 3-4 days.

Can I leave chicken in a crockpot overnight to make soup?
I don’t recommend leaving chicken in the slow cooker overnight. To avoid risking your food safety, it is best to cook the chicken and rest of the ingredients within a shorter time frame.

Can you overcook chicken in a slow cooker?
You can definitely overcook chicken in the slow cooker. If you cook it for too long, it can lose flavor and dry out. Check the internal temperature to ensure it’s cooked to perfection without being overcooked!

Can I use chicken stock instead of chicken broth?
Chicken broth and chicken stock are very similar and you can often use them interchangeably in recipes. They do the same job in the recipe — add flavor and moisture. In terms of flavor, they are a bit different. Chicken broth is usually a bit lighter when it comes to flavor while chicken stock is usually richer and has a more gelatinous texture.

Can I make crockpot chicken noodle soup without vegetables?
You definitely can. My recipe doesn’t call for vegetables because my kids freak out if the soup has vegetables. Traditional chicken soup does have delicious vegetables, but you can still get a soup packed with flavor without them.
