Ninja Foodi Pulled Pork

I remember like it was yesterday the first time I heard about pulled pork. My mum showed me this pulled pork recipe in a magazine and told me how much she wanted to try it and that it looked yummy.

Fast forward a few years and it became our most eaten slow cooker recipe and even all these years later, we love to make our slow cooker Asian pulled pork whenever there is a sale on pork shoulders.

But it wasn’t until a trip to Disney World and Universal Studios that I realised that pulled pork tasted best with tossed in barbecue sauce. In fact, we were at an all you can eat buffet at Aquatica and there were dishes just full of barbecue pulled pork and I was in total food heaven.

And while it is wonderful to cook a slow cooker version of pulled pork and then smother it in barbecue sauce, what was always missing was being able to make your pork shoulder crispy.

That is why I love to make a Ninja Foodi Pulled Pork. You see, you can combine the Ninja Foodi air fryer for browning your meat and giving it a crispy coating. Then you can use the pressure cooker to make perfectly tender pulled pork and that is exactly what I wanted to show you how to do today.

Ninja Foodi Pork Shoulder

You can use any pork shoulder to make pulled pork in the Ninja Foodi. Though I do prefer to use a boneless pork shoulder. That is because if you do bone in, you get less meat and you don’t get to enjoy as much pulled pork!

Ninja Foodi Boston Butt

Or if you live in the US you may call it a Boston Butt. Both a Boston Butt and a pork shoulder come from a similar place and both pork joints are flavoursome when cooked.

Many will tell you that a Boston butt is better, but I have enjoyed both many times over the years and don’t find much difference.

Or if I have to choose, I love to save money on groceries and will get whichever is cheapest.

How To Make Pulled Pork In A Ninja Foodi?

You are probably wondering why we use both the Ninja Air Fryer and the Ninja Pressure Cooker and what makes this method so good.

Well, this is because you can use the air fryer to give your pork shoulder a wonderful sear and make the edges nice and crispy. You can also ensure that your seasonings are getting right in the pork with an air fryer.

I have tried this without the air fryer and focused on the Ninja Foodi sear function, but it never does a good enough job.

Then once you have your air frying done, you can pressure cook your pork shoulder and then you have the tender pulled pork that you associate with the slow cooker.

How Long To Cook Ninja Foodi Pulled Pork?

You will be impressed with the quick cook times, especially when you compare it to the slow cooker and the 5 hours on high that you are probably used to.

Firstly, there is a 15 minute air fry cook time. To make sure your pork is seasoned beautifully and then it gets an even sear.

Secondly, there is a one hour pressure cook. This ensures that the pork is ridiculously tender and perfect for shredding and enjoying. In the past I have followed recipes when I first got an instant pot that recommended 45 minutes. Well, I wasn’t impressed as it felt too tough. But an hour was the winning cook time.

Notes

Quick. Because the Ninja Foodi has just been in use for the air fryer, when it comes to pressure cooking your pork shoulder, it will come to pressure fast.

Reserve. I love to reserve the leftover liquid and then use it for some pork stock or pork gravy for another meal.

Sauce. You can see any barbecue sauce that you like, or make your own.

FAQs

What is the secret to tender pulled pork? ›

Pulled pork is perfect for the slow cooker. Cooking the pork low and very slow is the secret to the juiciest and most tender pulled pork.

What is the best liquid to cook pulled pork in? ›

Transfer everything to a large slow cooker and add a splash of liquid — water is great, but so is broth, apple juice, or beer if you have them handy. Cover and cook on low until the meat is tender and pulls apart easily.

Is it better to slow cook or pressure cook pulled pork? ›

Slow cooking the meat means it never has the chance to toughen up and will be extra silky and tender. Pressure cooking is faster, though you may lose a little bit of the tenderness. If you're going for the pressure cook method, be sure to get a pork shoulder or pork butt, as opposed to a pork loin.

What is the best way to cook pork in the Ninja? ›

Pour 1 cup of water into the inner pot of the Ninja Foodi. Place the pork roast on the reversible rack in the low position and lower the rack into the inner pot. Put the pressure lid on and turn the valve to seal. Set the pressure on high for 15 minutes and press start.

Why add apple cider vinegar to pulled pork? ›

The acid from the apple cider and apple cider vinegar help to tenderize the meat while also keeping it juicy and flavorful. The low and slow cooking method makes it fall apart as soon as your fork touches it and shreds beautifully.

Why do you put vinegar in pulled pork? ›

After you've pulled your pork butt, drizzle over the meat and combine. The vinegar adds contrast to the smoky flavor and cuts through the fat in the meat. It also helps mellow out the darker, gamier-tasting parts of the butt. This makes enough for a 8 pound pork butt/shoulder.

How do I get more flavor in my pulled pork? ›

The smoke flavor is much more intense after the pulled pork has been sitting overnight. I simply take a container from fridge, bring to room temperature and re-heat at 175-200 degrees in a glass container for an hour or two (add a little apple juice or sweetened cider vinegar if needed).

What happens if you put too much BBQ sauce in pulled pork? ›

Namely, if you accidentally incorporate too much sauce, the flavor and texture of the pork are going to be completely overwhelmed by the sauce — meaning you'll have a soggy mess, including buns that are potentially too soaked to hold, that is also missing the complex flavors of the slow-roasted pork.

Should pulled pork be submerged in liquid? ›

Pour 1 1/2 cups liquid, such as low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth, tomato juice, light or amber beer, white or red wine, orange juice, or a mix of several liquids (and optional liquid smoke) over the pork. The pork should be only partially submerged, with some of the pork remaining above the surface of the liquid.

Can you overcook pulled pork in a pressure cooker? ›

The temperature inside a pressure cooker is about 250F at full pressure, which can easily overcook meat if you're not careful. It'll be stringy and dry.

Should you flip pulled pork in slow cooker? ›

I recommended turning the pork at least once to help the meat cook evenly.

Can you overcook pulled pork? ›

By the way, just as it's possible to overcook beef in a beef stew, it's quite possible to overcook pulled pork. You want your pork to be pull-apart tender—an indication that the connective tissue has broken down—but not so cooked that the muscle fibers themselves start to lose structure and turn to mush.

How do Chinese make pork so tender? ›

How do you tenderise pork for stir fry? Velveting is a Chinese technique that helps keep meat tender during stir frying. Adding cornstarch and bicarb to your meat during the marinating process helps to coat your meat, giving it a velvety feel that makes the meat feel extra soft.

Can I use Ninja Foodi as slow cooker? ›

As if there weren't enough uses for the Ninja Foodi, it even has a slow cook function. You can set the temp to high or low and remember to turn the black valve to vent when slow cooking. We want to release the built-up steam. While most of us like the speed of pressure cooking, the slow cook function sure has its uses.

How do you keep pork from drying out in an air fryer? ›

Using oil in an air fryer is perfectly fine and helps the meat to remain moist and come out looking golden brown. However, a little oil in an air fryer does go a long way. With most cuts of pork, simply rubbing some oil into the meat will be all you need. You can use either regular olive oil or a spray oil.

Does pulled pork get more tender the longer you cook it? ›

You can slow cook it in a slow cooker or oven at a low temperature for several hours until it's fully cooked and tender. This will help break down the tough connective tissues and collagen in the meat, resulting in a succulent and tender pork belly.

How do you get pulled pork to fall apart? ›

Place the roast in the oven and immediately turn the heat down to 200°F (95°C). Roast without opening the oven door for about 5 hours, until the meat is so tender that it pulls apart easily. If the meat does not pull apart easily, cover, and return to the oven and roast 30 minutes more.

Why did my pulled pork come out tough? ›

However, if the pork is cooked too long, it may become dry and hard instead of tender. When the internal temperature of the meat reaches 210 degrees F or more, the muscle fibers become tougher, and the meat becomes dry and chewy.
