Easy Pesto Pasta Recipe

This basil pesto pasta recipe is my favorite way to use my homemade pesto. Not only is it super tasty, it’s also quick and easy to prepare. The only other ingredients other than the pesto sauce you need are pasta, water, and salt – plus parmesan, if desired. That’s it!

I think this is the perfect recipe for busy weeknights but it’s also “fancy” enough that you can get away with serving it to guests. It literally tastes like a dish straight from an Italian restaurant!

What You’ll Need

This easy pesto pasta recipe is made with just 4 simple ingredients. See the recipe card below for measurements.

  • Pesto – This recipe is perfect with my easy homemade basil pesto recipe, but you can also use store-bought pesto. Pesto is typically made with fresh basil, olive oil, lemon juice, nuts (such as toasted pine nuts or walnuts), parmesan cheese and garlic blended in a food processor.
  • Pasta – We used spaghetti but you can use any pasta you’d like including rigatoni, fusilli, etc…
  • Salt
  • Pasta cooking water – Be sure to reserve a bit of the starchy pasta water when you drain the pasta.
  • Parmesan – Freshly grated parmesan is the perfect topping for this pasta.

Tips for Success

Here are a few tips for making the best pesto pasta.

  • Reserve pasta water. Be sure to reserve a bit of the pasta cooking water before draining the pasta. It helps to thin the pesto into a thinner sauce and the starch from the pasta helps add a creaminess as well.
  • What pasta goes best with pesto? I like to make this recipe with spaghetti noodles but you can use pretty much anything. Penne and ziti are good options as the texture holds the sauce well.
  • Salt the pasta. Salting the pasta water helps to add extra flavor to the pasta.
  • Possible add-ins. Strips of cooked chicken breast can be added for pesto chicken pasta or you can add some spinach or grape tomatoes.

What Goes Well With Pesto Pasta?

This easy basil pesto pasta makes an easy dinner on its own. You can also add a protein, like chicken or shrimp for a heartier meal. If you don’t want to add protein into the pasta, you can simply add some grilled chicken on the side. Sometimes we like to add in cherry tomatoes or olives.

Otherwise, a slice of crusty bread is all you need.

How to Store & Reheat Leftovers

  • Fridge. Store leftover pesto pasta in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat. Reheat the pasta in the microwave or on the stovetop. You may need to add a splash of water if it appears dry. Some people also enjoy cold pesto pasta.

What kind of cheese goes with pesto? ›

What Kind of Cheese Should I Use? I used fresh mozzarella because I love the way it melts, but you can use block or grated mozzarella in its place (that's usually more affordable as well). Other types of cheese that would work great with pesto are: smoked mozzarella, gruyere, swiss, brie, or white cheddar.

How to jazz up pesto? ›

To upgrade your favorite brand of pesto, turn it into a rich cream sauce by sauteing onions, garlic, seasonings, heavy cream, and shredded cheese. You can customize to your tastes by swapping onions for shallots, grated parmesan for shredded asiago, or a sprinkle of fresh herbs.

Anything sugary will work: granulated white sugar, honey, fruit juices, even sweet dessert wines. Acid in the form of vinegar or citrus juices can make a pesto taste less bitter and could even enhance the flavour of the sauce at the same time.

What is classic pesto made from? ›

The most popular variety of pesto now is made by "crushing" basil, garlic, pine nuts, olive oil and some hard cheese in a food processor or blender, but there are many varieties of pesto like sun dried tomato pesto or kale pesto.

What can I add to store bought pesto to make it better? ›

Additions - Some roasted or fresh cherry tomatoes would be delicious, I like to add fresh basil leaves to the top too. Pesto usually has pine nuts but you could add some extra toasted ones into the sauce. To add some greens you could mix through some chopped fresh spinach.

Why does my pesto pasta taste bland? ›

You do not need to cook pesto, as its flavours are best enjoyed raw. Instead, allow the residual heat from your freshly cooked pasta to gently warm it as you stir it in. Why is my pesto bland? It's likely because you need to add more basil or salt.

How do you balance pesto flavor? ›

Adding a small amount of acidity (lemon juice or vinegar) and balancing that with a little sweetness (sugar or honey) is the best way to take the edge off a pesto that tastes overwhelmingly of garlic. Almost every cuisine on earth makes use of garlic, and it's a vital component in pesto.

Why does my homemade pesto taste bad? ›

The most common reason for pesto tasting bitter is that the olive oil is past its best and has started to turn rancid. If the pesto has been made in a food processor or blender, there's also the possibility that it has turned bitter from the crude, sheering action of the blades.
