Favorite M&M Cookie Recipe

These are my favorite cookie from childhood that always satisfies those cookie cravings!

They can be made with regular-sized M&M’s or mini M&M’s, milk chocolate or dark chocolate flavor, and the great part is that you can use any color. It’s fun to switch the M&M’s out with different colors to complement the latest holiday.

You’ll love that they’re perfectly sweet, deliciously buttery, generously sized, and have the perfect texture. Truly a highlight of any celebration or weekend!

This is a cookie that checks all the boxes. Temptingly tasty, fun, and festive. Plus, they’re easy to make!

  1. Whisk dry ingredients: In a mixing bowl whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  2. Mix butter and sugars: In the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment cream together butter, brown sugar and granulated sugar until well blended.
  3. Add liquids: Mix in egg, then mix in egg yolk and vanilla extract.

  7. During the last 15 minutes of chilling preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  8. Transfer 10 dough balls to lined baking sheet, spacing 2-inches apart. Bake in preheated oven until done to desired liking, about 13 to 16 minutes.
  9. Let cool on baking sheet 5 minutes then transfer to a wire rack to cool. Repeat with remaining cookie dough balls.

Helpful Tips for the Best M and M Cookies

  • No need to whip butter and sugar until pale you just want to blend it for a chewy cookie that isn’t overly fluffy.
  • To keep cookies from over-spreading don’t skip chilling the cookie dough balls. And if at high altitude use the greater amount of flour listed (I’m at 5,000 ft and 2 1/2 cups works well for me).
  • A tip to keep them soft for a few days is to add a slice of bread to the storage container (just don’t place the slice directly atop any of the cookies or lay a piece of parchment beneath it). Crazy enough the moisture of the bread seems to transfer to the cookies and the bread goes stale.

Possible Christmas Cookie Variations

  • Add chocolate chips: White chocolate, milk chocolate, or dark chocolate.
  • Include multi-color jimmies sprinkles: I recommend adding some to the exterior (roll or press them in to stick before chilling).
  • Make cookies larger or smaller: Just adjust bake time accordingly. Even bite size cookies with mini M&M’s would be so fun (smaller shouldn’t need much chill time).
  • Add nuts: Mix in 1 cups chopped walnuts or pecans when adding M&M’s.

Make Ahead and Storage

  • Cookie dough can be made up to 3 months in advance and frozen, or refrigerated for 3 days.
  • Baked cookies can also be frozen, up to 2 months.
  • Store fresh baked cookies in an airtight container up to 4 days max.

A soft, chewy, buttery cookie that's much like a chocolate chip cookie but replaced with crisp shelled, sweet, multi-colored M&M's instead of chocolate chips. They are an absolute treat and so fun for people of all ages!

Servings: 20

Ingredients

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

  • In the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment cream together butter, brown sugar and granulated sugar on low speed until well blended. Scrape down bowl.

  • Mix in egg, then mix in egg yolk and vanilla extract. Scrape down bowl.

  • Add flour mixture to butter mixture and mix just until combined. Then add half of the M&M's (3/4 cup) and mix in.

  • Scoop dough out 3 Tbsp at a time and shape into balls (I recommend a #20 cookie scoop). Press remaining M&M's (3/4 cup) randomly around each dough ball.

  • Transfer to a small baking sheet lined with parchment paper (or a large flat plate), cover and refrigerate 2 hours.

  • During the last 15 minutes of chilling preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line two 18 by 13-inch baking sheets with parchment paper.

  • Transfer 10 dough balls to lined baking sheet, spacing 2-inches apart. Bake in preheated oven until done to desired liking, about 13 to 16 minutes (they should appear slightly puffed and under-baked).

  • Let cool on baking sheet 5 minutes then transfer to a wire rack to cool. Repeat with remaining cookie dough balls.

Notes

*If you are at high altitude or if your cookies are normally prone to spreading use 2 1/2 cups (354g) all-purpose flour.

Ugly, but tasted really good. I did have the correct size scoop but they spread so much I couldn’t use the method to bring the sides in. I might try using a little less butter next time and a bit less sugar. My hubby says make them the same way!

Made these exactly as directed tonight for a potluck and they were literally all eaten!! These were great and I will make again.

I’ve given this recipe 2 stars due to baking issues. The author states 13-16 minutes but 13 minutes was entirely too long. They turned out pretty hard and they all ended up in the trash. My cookie scoop I think is smaller than the #20 recommended because I ended up with almost 39 cookies as opposed to 20. You should mention that smaller cookies require less time. I’m sure that’s common sense to people that bake a lot but for those of us who don’t bake too often it would be great to let us know this.

I’m sorry this happened. That’s why I listed the amount of the scoop, I recommend before each recipe if you don’t know the size of the scoop you’re using simply fill it with the TBSP listed of water to check then dry it before using. It’s noted smaller cookies can be made but bake time would need to be decreased. Sorry they didn’t turn out!

No worries. Tried them again and the bake was better at 10 minutes but going to try 3/4 cup butter next time. They were still a little Greasy. Maybe that will help. All in all though much better.

Can I use SR flour instead of AP and not use the baking powder and baking soda?

I don’t recommend self rising flour here which includes baking powder because cookies would end up coming out more cakey rather than chewy.

FAQs

How do you keep M&Ms from cracking in the oven? ›

If your M&Ms keep cracking or losing their shape while baking, try using mini M&Ms. These are smaller and less likely to melt, which is why they're my favorite for this recipe. You can also try freezing your M&Ms before adding them to the dough which will also help them to retain their shape while baking.

Will M&M melt in the oven? ›

No, at a standard baking temperature of 350 degrees F or close to it, standard M&Ms will not melt in the oven.

Can you use regular M&Ms for baking? ›

Absolutely. You will find that you like the outcome as well. You can put peanut butter chips in as well. putting M&M's and peanut butter chips in the batter, then coat the top (after it's baked) in melted chocolate, let that cool and then coat with a peanut butter, or peanut butter frosting.. would be delicious.

Can you eat M&M cookie dough? ›

Indulge in the delicious and fun treat of Edible M&M Cookie Dough! Mix and match the colors of the M&Ms to match different holidays and celebrations for a versatile and festive dessert. And don't worry, it's completely safe to eat!

How do you keep M&Ms from bleeding in cookies? ›

Press the chocolate chips and/or M&Ms into the top of the ball of dough closer together than you think, as they'll spread apart as the cookie bakes and spreads. If refrigerating or freezing your dough, wait to dot each ball until right before baking as the M&M colors can bleed into your cookie.

Why are my M&M cookies flat? ›

If your cookies consistently come out flat, you may have selected the wrong baking temperature. If you bake cookies using too much heat, the fats in the dough begin to melt before the other ingredients can cook together and form your cookie's rise.

At what temperature will M&Ms melt? ›

And, no, M&Ms won't handle that. Like a lot of milk chocolate, they melt around 90-91F.

What keeps M&Ms from melting? ›

A) On the most basic level the crispy sugar coating is acting as an insulator (having a relatively low specific heat capacity) which prevents (or slows) the direct transfer of heat from the fingers/palm directly to the chocolate.

Why do M&Ms turn white? ›

What does it mean when chocolate turns white? Discoloration of chocolate happens for two reasons: fat bloom or sugar bloom. Fat bloom occurs when liquid fat moves through the chocolate and then crystalizes on the surface. It's usually caused by a quick change in temperature.

What is the best temperature to bake cookies? ›

Cookie temperatures fluctuate, with some recipes as low as 300 degrees Fahrenheit, and a few as high as 425 degrees Fahrenheit, but most recipes land on 375 or 350 to evenly bake the entirety of the cookie.

What does cornstarch do to cookies? ›

1. Cookies. Cornstarch does kind of incredible things to cookies. I mean not only does it give them soft centers, prevents them from spreading, and makes them somewhat thick (in a good way), but it also contributes to the chewiness factor, which, in my opinion, is the most important cookie attribute.

Is it safe to bake cookie dough left out overnight? ›

It is recommended to discard the raw cookie dough that has been left out overnight and prepare a fresh batch of dough to ensure the safety of the final baked cookies.

What are the ingredients in M&M cookie dough? ›

Ingredients: heat-treated wheat flour, sugar, palm kernel oil, mini m&m's, coated milk chocolate chips, tapioca syrup, glycerin, vanilla - artificial, salt, xanthan gum, potassium sorbate, duralox rosemary. Contains Milk, Soy, and Wheat.

Are M&Ms heat resistant? ›

The only chocolates that can withstand hot hands in August heat for any length of time are peanut M&Ms (I ignore all the other types).

Why is my melting chocolate cracking? ›

This can happen if the heat was set too high or if you didn't stir it enough while melting it. Is your chocolate ruined? Well, in this case, yes, it is.

Is it OK to microwave M&Ms? ›

However, you must carefully watch the M&M's, as a few extra seconds could result in the candy burning inside your microwave. Microwaves vary, so you may need to do a test run. If the candy is cracked with chocolate seeping out, use these over-melted pieces to dress up other snacks.
