How Long Do I Roast Carrots?

The time it takes to roast carrots depends on the temperature you are using. We recommend roasting carrots at 400 degrees for 25-30 minutes to make them crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

I love roasting carrots in the oven because they come out perfectly tender and I can usually throw them in the oven while I’m preparing the rest of our meal.

Wonderful recipe! Made some modifications because I wanted to try the recipe asap and don't want to go to the store, haha. I used whole carrots (4 very large ones and sliced them), and substituted honey for agave syrup. Baked 35mins @400. YUMMM!!!!

  14. Kim B says:

Tried these last night with a family of picky eaters that snal their noses at anything healthy...these were a big hit! Thanks

  15. Down South Mama says:

These look great but i feel that i should mention that avoiding baby carrots whenever possible is best. Manufacturers run them through a bleach bath to achieve their smooth appearance. Just a thought. Carrots with skin are much healthier anyway!

  16. Abbey B says:

Hello! These carrots sound so yummy! If I wanted to cook these in the crock pot instead of in the oven, how long would you suggest they cook for?

  17. Cyd says:

The high temp on a crock pot is about 300 degrees (depending on the brand of the crock pot). According to our recipe these cook in the oven at 400. We have only made them in the oven so we aren't sure what the length of cooking time would be. You will need to cook a little longer to make up for the temp difference.

  18. HEather says:

How soft are these carrots? I need soft carrots because I have had major dental work. TIA

  19. Cyd says:

They are fork tender, but if you need them softer from your dental work, just cook a little bit longer. Best of luck with your mouth healing!

FAQs

Why are my roasted carrots still hard? ›

You don't have to, but I do prefer to remove the peel from the carrots before roasting them. If you'd rather not mess with peeling them at all, you can leave it on (wash them well!) or use baby carrots instead. Why are my roasted carrots hard? If your carrots are still hard, then they are likely undercooked.

How do you get the most flavor out of carrots? ›

Carrots are naturally sweet, cutting them doesn't affect the flavor. If you want them even sweeter, roasting is a good option. Toss them with some oil, and something sweet- maple syrup, orange juice or even a little honey.

How to make Gordon Ramsay carrots? ›

Cooking instructions

Heat the olive oil in a large sauté pan, then add the carrots and parsnips and toss to coat in the oil. Add the thyme, cinnamon, star anise and some seasoning. Cook over a medium heat for 15-20 minutes, turning the vegetables frequently, until golden brown and almost cooked through.

Are carrots better boiled or roasted? ›

Roasted carrots have the best texture, and the flavor is amazing. Roasting draws out the natural sweetness and you get a nice caramelized flavor. They're so much better than boiled carrots! Roasting is also easy; it's hard to overcook a roasted vegetable: if it gets too done, it's clearly burned.

Why are my carrots not getting soft in oven? ›

Undercook them, and the texture is tough and dense. Overcook them, and they're dry and wrinkled. The secret is to soften the carrots slightly by boiling them briefly before roasting. The texture will be firm-tender with just the right amount of caramelization on the outside.

Why do my carrots never soften? ›

It's not the vegetables or your cooking skills, it's the amount of acidic liquids in the cooking liquid! As you've no doubt observed in your everyday cooking, vegetables normally soften as they cook.

What makes carrots taste better? ›

Butter will help to mask the canned flavor of the carrots, improve the texture, and add a little salt. For a healthier alternative, try using extra virgin olive oil. High-quality olive oil has a fruity and herbal flavor that can make any vegetable go from zero to one hundred with just a splash.

What makes carrots taste good? ›

Carrots are a unique vegetable because they seem to have a taste which battles sweetness and harshness. The sweetness of carrots comes from the presence of multiple sugars such as glucose, fructose and sucrose.

Why are my carrots bland? ›

Carrots maturing under warm temperatures or high moisture conditions lack good root color. These carrots also have poor flavor and texture. Plant carrots so they mature under relatively cool temperatures that average less than 80 degrees F. Avoid excessive soil moisture.

What not to mix carrots with? ›

For the same reason, one shouldn't mix orange with carrot as when taken together, they may cause heartburn and excess bile reflux. Only a few fruits are starchy in nature. These include green bananas and plantains.

How does Jamie Oliver make honey roast parsnips? ›

Parboil the parsnips in boiling salted water for 10 minutes, then drain well. Pick the thyme leaves. Toss the parsnips with the honey, thyme, a pinch of sea salt and black pepper, 10g of the butter and 2 tablespoons of oil. Tip into a roasting tray and arrange in one layer, then roast for 40 minutes, or until golden.

Are roasted carrots still healthy? ›

Your body has an easier time absorbing the carotenoids in carrots if you eat them cooked rather than raw. Cooking breaks down the vegetable's cell walls, making its nutrients more available. Of course, how you cook them matters—boiling vegetables can leach out nutrients, so it's better to steam, sauté, or roast.

How many carrots should I eat a day? ›

However, as a general guideline, eating 1 to 2 medium-sized carrots per day can be a healthy addition to your diet. Carrots are nutritious and provide essential vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. They are especially rich in beta-carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A and supports eye health and immunity.

What kind of sugar is in carrots? ›

Sucrose, glucose, and fructose are the major sugars present in carrot roots: total sugar content ranges from 3.5 to 10.7% in fresh carrots (8-10). In raw carrots purchased at a local market, sucrose was the major sugar (representing 56.9% of total sugars), followed by glucose (24.6%) and fructose (18.5%) (11).

How long does it take for carrots to soften when cooking? ›

Boil sliced carrots for 4-5 minutes, baby carrots for 6-7 minutes, and whole carrots for 10-15 minutes. This time will vary slightly depending on the thickness of the carrots. Carrots will be done boiling when they are fork tender.

How do you soften cooked carrots? ›

Place the carrots in boiling water. Blanch the carrots for 5 minutes, starting when the water returns to a boil. Drain the hot water and run cold water over the carrots for 4 to 5 minutes. Or you can microwave the carrots in a bowl with water and covered with a lid or a plate on high for 2 minutes.

At what temperature do carrots soften? ›

At 183°F (84°C), carrots will soften but not turn mushy. The sous-vide method means that the carrots cook in their own juices, packing them with intense carrot flavor.

Why do carrots take so long to cook in oven? ›

They can also take longer to cook because the oven heat has to work through the mass of vegetables. Luckily, it's easy to avoid these issues. All you need to do is arrange the carrots in a single layer with some space between them on the roasting pan.
