DIY Burp Cloths with Heat Transfer Vinyl + Cricut (2024)

I’m SO excited to share my latest “getting ready for baby” project with you- DIY burp cloths with heat transfer vinyl and my Cricut machine!

Did you know that you can dress up those plain white burp cloths from the store in just a few minutes, and with absolutely NO sewing?

I wanted some cute custom baby girl burp cloths but didn’t want to spend tons of money on buying them.

I bought a bag of my favorite Gerber burp cloths that are nice and thick, then got to work creating a couple of cute designs to cut out of heat transfer vinyl with my Cricut machine.

You can use a Cricut Explore or Cricut Maker for this project!

DIRECTIONS:

STEP 1. Go to Cricut Design Space to get my free design.

You can press “Customize” to edit my design or just click “Make It” to make it just like mine.

Place the iron on material onto your mat shiny side down.

Turn on your Cricut machine, adjust the setting on the machine to “Iron-On,” then follow the prompts to cut out the design.

Usually you would have the machine cut the mirror image when using heat transfer vinyl, but since the hearts are all symmetrical, it didn’t matter for this project (so I didn’t doit).

STEP 2. Once the hearts are all cut out, use your weeding tool to remove the negativevinyl from around the hearts, so that just the hearts are left on the plastic sheet.

Cut the plastic in half so that you have two strips of hearts that are 2 hearts wide on each strip.

This is how wide the burp cloth middle section is, so cutting into the strips will make the hearts fit perfectly!

STEP 3. The Cricut EasyPress is the BEST way to adhere the iron-on vinyl to the burp cloth because it creates a much better bond than an iron and will last much longer.

That being said, an iron will work too.

I LOVE my EasyPress and use it all the time!

If using the Cricut EasyPress, turn the machine on and adjust the settings depending on which type of Iron-On you are using.

For the Iron-On Lite on the cotton burp cloths, the settings will be 305 degrees for 30 seconds.

For the Gold Foil Iron-On on the cotton burp cloths, the settings will be 295 degrees for 35 seconds.

Once your machine isheated up,pre-heat the burp cloth so that the heat transfer vinyl adheres well.

Do this by placing a towel or cloth under the burp cloth, then place the EasyPress where the first set of hearts will go in the middle of the burp cloth for 3-5seconds to remove wrinkles and moisture.

Place the hearts, plastic liner side up, onto the bottom section in the middle of the burp clothso it’s nice and straight.

Place the EasyPress over the vinyl iron-on hearts, then press the Cricut “C” button to start the time on the EasyPress.

When the machine beeps, remove the EasyPress.

Let cool before removing the plastic lining.

Repeat step 3 tofinish therestof the burp cloth.

STEP 4. If using an iron, set your iron to the Cotton/Linen setting, and make sure that the steam setting is OFF.

Iron the bottom middle area of the burp cloth that will have the hearts on it for 10-15 seconds.

Place the hearts, plastic liner side up, onto the bottom section in the middle of the burp clothso it’s nice and straight.

Apply medium pressure with the iron for 25-30 seconds.

Flip the burp cloth over and repeat by applying pressure with the iron for another 25-30 seconds.

Let cool, then remove the plastic lining.

Repeat step 4 to finish the rest of the burp cloth.

Aren’t these DIY burp cloths beautiful?

I made some of these easy burp cloths with gold foil hearts, pink hearts, and black hearts.

The gold foil burp cloths are my favorite for sure!

Look how pretty they are when they shine and sparkle, perfect for a shiny brand new little baby girl.

These DIY burp cloths are so unique too- I’ve never seen gold foil burp cloths before!

I’m so excited to use these in just a few short weeks. 😉

I made this black heart burp cloth to match my daughter’s Pottery Barn Kids black heart blanket.

The gold leaf heart burp cloth matches a gold leaf swaddle blanket I bought.

Love that you can customize these burp cloths to match outfits, blankets, or anything else you would like!

I’ve got another fun DIY burp cloths design using heat transfer vinyl that I’ll be sharing soon.

FAQs

What is the best fabric for burp cloths? ›

I would say cotton fabric would be good for burp cloths because it is both soft and absorbent.

Do you use batting in burp cloths? ›

Purchase ⅓ yard of flannel for each of your homemade baby burp cloths. I also used Cotton Batting for padding. The cotton flannel and batting are both washable and absorbent. Note: You could choose to get a fleece iron on interfacing instead of the batting if you prefer.

How many layers of flannel do I need for a burp cloth? ›

I only use two flannels no batting when making burp cloths. I have seen some in LQS that use just two layers of flannel. They feel really soft and I bet they are absorbent. I have been making burp clothes using flannel on one side and a prefolded diaper on the other.

Can you use Siser heat transfer vinyl with a Cricut maker? ›

In conclusion, Siser HTV — and a variety of other brands of vinyl — are compatible with Cricut printing equipment. Compatible options include Oracal, 3M, Avery, StarCraft, and StyleTech. When choosing the best Siser HTV for your Cricut machine, consider factors like ease of application, durability, and color options.

Is muslin or cotton better for burp cloths? ›

Muslin burp cloths are lightweight, breathable, soft, and durable. They are gentle on a baby's delicate skin and absorbent, making them ideal for daily use and quick cleanups. Cotton burp cloths are a bit heavier, but usually softer, more comfortable and absorbent. They also hold up well after multiple washings.

What is the best color for a burp cloth? ›

I've used different alternatives for batting including:
  • Used ight flannel bedsheets.

  • Used bedsheet.
  • Knit polo shirts, cut out and laid flat.
  • No batting, to minimize weight.

Does Minky fabric work for burp cloths? ›

These burp cloths are ridiculously easy to make–seriously, if you can sew in a straight line, you can make these. They are so much softer and cuter than cloth diapers, and they make perfect baby shower gifts. Whip up several, and grab them whenever you need a quick gift.

Why are burp cloths thicker in the middle? ›

Some burp cloths are designed to be thicker in the middle to catch and absorb the bulk of spit-up or vomit, keeping it away from your clothes.

What is most absorbent fabric? ›

The most common absorbent fibre used is cotton, but other fabrics have recently been designed that are more absorbent, such as modal, micro-modal, Tencel®, and other viscose-based fibres. All of these are made from the same base material – plant cellulose – which loves water.

What is burp cloth fabric? ›

A burp cloth is a piece of fabric used as a barrier between your baby's spit-up and your clothing. The burp cloth is placed between your baby's mouth and your shoulder when you burp them to aid their digestion. The idea is for the spit-up to land on the burp cloth instead of your clothes.

Can you use minky fabric for burp cloths? ›

I have used this method to sew burp clothes for all of my own kids and they are always a great baby shower gift too! If you are new to sewing, this tutorial is for you! If sewing with the minky fabric makes you a little nervous you can always use chenille because it doesn't slip around as much as the minky fabric can.
